Role: Conversational AI Engineer – WhatsApp-based AI Concierge (Remote, Anywhere)

The client seeks a self-directed Conversational AI Engineer to build an end-to-end WhatsApp-based AI concierge platform for the tourism industry. This role requires a hands-on builder capable of owning the entire development lifecycle—from architecture to deployment—while collaborating with a non-technical founder.

This is a unique opportunity to lead the technical execution of a greenfield product that combines curated content with advanced conversational AI to deliver real-time support to travellers via WhatsApp.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop a fully functional MVP from the ground up.
• Work independently with minimal technical guidance, while communicating clearly with a non-technical founder.
• Integrate WhatsApp Business API via Whapi, Twilio, or 360Dialog.
• Build a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipeline using LangChain, LlamaIndex, and OpenAI GPT-4o.
• Ingest and structure content from a CMS and web-scraped sources via REST or Webhooks.
• Store and manage chat history and user metadata using PostgreSQL.
• Implement monitoring tools, unit and integration tests to ensure product reliability.
• Document deployment, infrastructure, and maintenance steps for ongoing support.
  
  

Required Skills & Experience

• 3+ years of experience building production-grade chatbots or conversational AI systems.
• Proven ability to take projects from idea to deployment independently.
• Strong backend development skills using Python or TypeScript/Node.js.
• Hands-on experience with WhatsApp Business API platforms (Whapi, Twilio, or 360Dialog).
• Practical knowledge of LLM-based RAG architectures and vector databases (e.g., Supabase, Pinecone, Weaviate).
• Experience integrating with RESTful and/or GraphQL CMS systems.
• Familiarity with GDPR-compliant practices for PII and consent flows.
• Ability to communicate progress and challenges clearly to non-technical stakeholders.

Nice to Have

• Experience with Klaviyo API or Meta Messenger API.
