COBOL Developer – Legacy Application Modernization (Remote – Anywhere)

Overview


The client seeks experienced COBOL Developers to join a dedicated team supporting a long-standing in-house system, the SOLD application, which underpins critical dealing and accounting functions. With over four decades of operational history, the SOLD application remains central to the client’s business processes. This engagement focuses on stabilizing, sustaining, and modernizing the platform while ensuring robust performance across both intra-day and overnight operations.


These are remote roles (anywhere), although initial collaboration may include some in-person onboarding time in Pune, India, to ensure effective knowledge transfer during the early stages.



Key Responsibilities


Application Maintenance & Support


  • Identify, triage, and resolve issues across SCOBOL, COBOL85, and Pathway-based programs.
  • Monitor and support batch processes running intra-day and overnight to ensure seamless execution.
  • Manage and resolve application incidents to minimize downtime and maintain business continuity.


Development & Enhancements


  • Extend and enhance existing functionality within SCOBOL, COBOL85, and related modules.
  • Support integration initiatives with MQ and CONNECT:DIRECT, ensuring optimized data flow.
  • Develop and optimize ENSCRIBE databases and ENFORM reports to improve reporting and transactional efficiency.


System & Utilities Expertise


  • Apply TMF for transaction integrity and recovery.
  • Utilize HPE Nonstop Utilities (FUP, TEDIT, PERUSE, etc.) for system administration and troubleshooting.
  • Support and tune Pathway applications to maintain high availability and performance standards.


Knowledge Transfer & Best Practices


  • Produce and maintain clear, detailed documentation for all development and maintenance activities.
  • Engage in collaborative knowledge sharing to ensure continuity across teams.
  • Champion best practices in coding standards, testing methodology, and secure deployment processes.



Qualifications & Experience


  • Strong proficiency in SCOBOL, COBOL85, and Pathway development.
  • Hands-on experience with HPE Nonstop systems and related utilities.
  • Familiarity with ENSCRIBE, ENFORM, MQ, and CONNECT:DIRECT environments.
  • Solid understanding of batch processing, incident management, and transaction control (TMF).
  • Ability to work collaboratively in remote, distributed teams.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Tandem experience is required



Engagement Details


  • Contract Duration: 12–18 months (full-time, 5 days per week)
  • Start Date: Within the next few weeks (flexible for candidates currently engaged; availability within 60–90 days considered)
  • Location: Remote (anywhere); preference for candidates able to spend the first few weeks in Pune, India
  • Rate: Up to £130 per day
  • Number of Roles: 2–3 positions available (additional candidates encouraged for pipeline consideration)
